Abstract: Cooperation includes rescue of icebreaker Solovey Budimirovitch by icebreakers Svyatogor (under Otto Sverdrup; later Krasin) and Kanada (The Third International) and team of reindeer from Obdorsk, and searches for Nobile and Amundsen. Trade was barter to start with, and trading offices were set up in Arkhangel'sk and elsewhere. Treaty was signed in 1921, mainly for corn, timber, tar, furs and flax versus boats, hawsers and fishing tackle. Nationalisation hampered cooperation. Conflicts include status of Svalbard (USSR signed treaty in 1935), Norwegian activities on Novaya Zemlya and Franz Josef Land, and sealing in White Sea. Soviets drew up claims to sea sector and agreements lasted until Stalin's time.
