La Recherche-ekspedisjonen in vitenskapshistorisk lys / Einar-Arne Drivenes.
Title: | La Recherche-ekspedisjonen in vitenskapshistorisk lys / Einar-Arne Drivenes. |
Translated title: | The La Recherche expedition in the light of the history of science. |
Author(s): | Drivenes, Einar-Arne. |
Date: | 1996. |
Publisher: | Tromsø: Ravnetrykk |
Language: | Norwegian. |
In: | Ultima Thule. (1996.), |
Abstract: | Describes route of primarily oceanographic expedition, leader Joseph-Paul Gaimard and his Greenland experience, Franco-Scandinavian backing and scientists and programme (extended to study glaciers, astronomy, magnetism, weather, fauna and flora - e.g. behaviour when midnight sun prevents night respiration). Anthropology was job of Xavier Marmier, who stayed in Finnmark to get to know Saami, so poorly observed by most travellers. He respected survival qualities of all northerners. Article sets expedition in frame of many such by Bering, Maupertuis, Cook, de Bougainville, Rosses and Wilkes, following von Humboldt's holistic principles. It describes how social Darwinism came to influence ethnology. Expeditions also produced many excellent illustrations in new, realistic style. Final section covers political change after Napoleonic wars, and role of Royal Navy in keeping "freedom of the seas". |
