Fra primitivt til pittoresk. Ei kort historie om hvordan Nord-Norge ble vakkert / Nils M. Knutsen.

Title: Fra primitivt til pittoresk. Ei kort historie om hvordan Nord-Norge ble vakkert / Nils M. Knutsen.
Translated title: From primitive to picturesque. A short history of how North Norway became beautiful.
Author(s): Knutsen, Nils M.
Date: 1996.
Publisher: Tromsø: Ravnetrykk
Language: Norwegian.
In: Ultima Thule. (1996.),
Abstract: Early accounts had dark and creepy atmosphere - impassable sea, terrible storms, monsters on land and sea, and inhospitable soil. Pity for wretches living in Lofoten developed. In about decade of 19th Cent. fearful North became unforgettable experience and tourist draw. Article describes change. Petter Dass started it in "Nordlands Trompet", though not interested in aesthetics. He used fisher-farmers' own dress for his verse, "stained with grease and tar". Gustav Blom in 1827 saw beauty in greenness of fields and woods, but disliked bare rock. Elijah Walton painted Norwegian coast in 1970, and Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson listed reasons for going north, in 1869. King Oscar travelled to North Cape in 1873; first cruise to Miidnight Sun was arranged from London in 1874. Romanticism had replaced rationalism.
