Abstract: | Describes and discusses Olaus Magnus's great work "History of the Northern Peoples", 1555, 22 books in 770 chapters, heavily illustrated with woodcuts. It was based on extensive travel besides authorities such as Adam of Bremen and Saxo Grammaticus, and set out to be encyclopaedic. Olaus's use of threat of magic to defend his beloved North Sweden harmed Sweden's case in 30 Years' War, was investigated by Johannes Schefferus in "Lapponia", 1673 and followed up paranoically by Jean Bodin with fatal consequences for many women. |
