Surface modifications to reduce thaw degradation of permafrost / John P. Zarling, Jasper Rajesh.

Title: Surface modifications to reduce thaw degradation of permafrost / John P. Zarling, Jasper Rajesh.
Author(s): Zarling, John P.
Rajesh, Jasper.
Date: 1996.
Publisher: New York: American Society of Civil Engineers
In: Cold Regions Engineering. The Cold Regions Infrastructure : an International Imperative for the 21st Century. Proceedings of the 8th International Conference, held 12-16 August 1996, Fairbanks, AK. (1996.),
Abstract: Evaluates two surface modification techniques to reduce permafrost degradation below roadway embankments. Snow management on side slopes showed 20% increase in freezing n-factor. Placing quarry rock to depth of 1.3m on side slopes gave increase in freezing and decrease in thawing n-factors of 150%, respectively. Mean annual soil surface temperature was reduced by 8°C.
