Abstract: Describes 1996 eruption under Vatnajökull, with many photographs. "Memorable book about magnificent glacier and its giant event." Centre was volcano Bárdharbunga, with caldera c. 700 m deep. Core taken in 1972 showed 30 eruptions from 1650, but did not reach bottom. Statistics and illustrations are given of Vatnajökull's size and rivals, chief peaks, huge flow of water caused by eruption, previous eruptions, and hlaups in 1994 and 1995. Includes early kettle sinks, breaking smooth ice cap, and eventual ice canyon. Flow reached over 10 000 m³/sec, carrying quite large icebergs with it.
