Abstract: Author's study of folk music took him to Lapland in 1966 with young Pekka Sammallahti as interpreter. Their informants included Johan Näkkäläjärvi, Martti Stoor and Eino Ruotsala, who passed on many yoiks. He collected 276 yoiks, analyses music, compares it with other Finno-Ugrian music, describes ornamentation and traditional singing style, and Magdolna Kovács provides transcription and translation of texts. She explains different reasons for frequent paddings in yoiks.
