Radar surveys on Scandinavian glaciers, in search of useful climate archives / Per Holmlund, Jens-Ove Näslund, Cecilia Richardson.

Title: Radar surveys on Scandinavian glaciers, in search of useful climate archives / Per Holmlund, Jens-Ove Näslund, Cecilia Richardson.
Author(s): Holmlund, Per.
Näslund, Jens-Ove.
Richardson, Cecilia.
Date: 1996.
In: Geografiska Annaler. Series A. Physical Geography. (1996.), Vol. 78A(2-3) (1996)
Abstract: As most Scandinavian glaciers are of temperate type, climatic signals of ice cores are poorly preserved. But in more continental parts of mountain range there is often substantial cold surface layer in ablation area. Article describes investigation by radar sounding of Storglaciären and nearby Mårmaglaciären, showing that Mårmaglaciären has significantly thicker cold surface layer. Area has strong east-west climatic gradient. Annual average air temperatures at sites are similar, but precipitation rates are in ratio 1:2, while cold surface layer thicknesses are in ratio 2:1. Attributes this to weaker snow-cover insulation from winter cold and lower net ablation. Comments on value of radar sounding.
