| Abstract: | Author interviews Jarle Jonassen, chairman in Riast/Hylling grazing district, centred on Røros. District has had long series of legal cases to fight, and usually lose. Written accounts of deer herding in district are rare, as Saami were illiterate in 17th Cent. Recent changes in both cattle and reindeer methods have worked in some ways to advantage of both, but fences become more necessary, and there is reluctance to pay for them. Latest Reindeer Herding law is helpful, as it sets boundaries largely where they are currently. Jonassen describes how his became exemplary modern herding district. |
