Ensidig bevegelsesretning hos rein / Knut Kinderås, Yngve Espmark.
Title: | Ensidig bevegelsesretning hos rein / Knut Kinderås, Yngve Espmark. |
Translated title: | Biassed choice of direction among reindeer. |
Author(s): | Kinderås, Knut. Espmark, Yngve. |
Date: | 1996. |
Language: | Norwegian. |
In: | Reindriftsnytt. (1996.), Vol. 30(3) (1996) |
Abstract: | Everyone knows that reindeer rotate anti-clockwise nearly all the time. Not everyone has thought much why they have this special bent. They also tend to use left forefoot for grubbing in snow. Authors have examined 35 brains and found right halves tend to be heavier. In a Y-shaped funnel, trial deer took left branch. Reason for rotation could also be to baffle predators, who lose sight of individual quarry. Choice of left also may have been reaction to lassoing by mainly right-handed herders. Authors give justification for such apparently useless research. |
Notes: | Reindriftsnytt. Vol. 30(3) :50-52 (1996). |
Keywords: | 599.735.3 -- Cervidae: Rangifer tarandus. 636.294 -- Reindeer husbandry. H6 -- Zoology: mammals. (*3) -- Arctic regions. (*58) -- Norway. |
