Abstract: First written knowledge of reindeer is found in 499 AD. Although by end of 1300s more became known about them, reindeer herding really began noticeably at end of Middle Ages. Traditional Saami herding's effective organization was Saami siida. In 1898 Finnish senate obliged reindeer owners to organise grazing, at any rate to decide definite geographic boundaries. Article describes current concerns, research, effect of EU membership on reindeer herding economy, and some vehicles now in use.
