| Abstract: | Brief history of region since 1478 is given. It gave Russia ice-free and Sweden-free access to Atlantic, besides possibility of Pomor, and later timber, trade. New transport and communications technology now make it possible to build variety of economic and social networks. Many aspects of industry and employment in region are analysed, tabulated and compared between countries and over time. Suggestions for future development are made and predictions are attempted. Joint ventures are still small scale, and special measures needed for cooperation with Russia at present are described. |
