Record #140871:

A survey of Palaeo-Eskimo sites in northern East Greenland / Claus Andreasen.

Title: A survey of Palaeo-Eskimo sites in northern East Greenland / Claus Andreasen.
Author(s): Andreasen, Claus.
Date: 1996.
Publisher: Copenhagen: Danish Polar Center
In: Paleo-Eskimo Cultures of Greenland - new perspectives in Greenlandic archaeology. (1996.), Vol. 13
Abstract: Survey from Shannon to Nioghalvfjerdsfjorden turned up 70 sites, with c. 850 Palaeo-Eskimo remains. Site at Kap Sankt Jacques held c. 400 features. More than 60 sites are coastal and close to areas with early ice break-up. Lithic material seems to reflect two phases: Pre-Dorset and Dorset. 10 sites are assigned to earliest phase, c. 2100-1300 BC. Another 15 sites are assigned to c. 700-300 BC. Datings of phases are compared with those in Peary Land. Major settlement areas are Dove Bugt and at Île de France. Faunal material was very scarce but included seal, walrus, polar bear and muskox.
