Abstract: One of greatest eruptions of century occurred between 30 Sep. and 14 Oct. 1996. From series of fracture craters below Vatnajökull Glacier, 500 million cubic m of lava erupted. Glacier above c 600 m thick melted, producing mass of c. 9 billion cu m. of water. This first collected in enormous caldera under glacier, then, on 5 Nov. generated giant jökulhlaup, immense flood sweeping away enormous quantities of mud, rock and ice from underlying plains to sea, where compact stream advanced for good 200 km.
