| Abstract: | Examines differences between national and regional perspectives on economic development of Russian Far East, with particular reference to potential for resource-based development. Reviews historical role of region in Tsarist and Soviet empires and highlights continuities in debates in Russia on role of Far East in national economy. Analyses results of recent elections and discusses them in relation to case of oil and gas development in Respublika Sakha and Sakhalinskaya Oblast'. |
