520 3# ‡aMeltwater drainage or accumulation basins, and frozen lakes were observed during the Norwegian Antarctic Research Expedition (NARE) in 1989-90. These features were also detected via Landsat Thematic Mapper images from February 1990. During NARE 1993-94 further studies revealed sub-surface melting and runoff even with negative air temperatures, as a result of penetrative solar radiation. Temperatures in blue-ice 1m below the surface were six degrees higher than under snowpacks.
