Abstract: | Population was 85% Saami, with few permanent settlements. During 17th Cent. colonization led to organization of Church and to parishes. Parishioners were obliged to attend church stipulated number of times (often once) yearly, depending on distance from building. Two examples of duties given to layman were "byabön", simple home service, using Postilla (books of homilies) and "nöddop", private baptism. At beginning of 19th Cent., 90% of baptisms were of this sort. |
