Record #140435:

The Nordic Arctic environment - unspoilt, exploited, polluted? / Claes Bernes.

Title: The Nordic Arctic environment - unspoilt, exploited, polluted? / Claes Bernes.
Author(s): Bernes, Claes.
Date: 1996.
Publisher: Copenhagen: Nordic Council of Ministers
Abstract: Study covers North Calotte, Iceland, Greenland and Svalbard. Setting, flora and fauna are described, followed by different impacts of man on Arctic, from hunting and whaling to tourism, and more remote effects of urban and industrial emissions. Conclusions note that environmental problems may be greatest from more "nature-friendly" activities, such as clear-felling, hydroelectric plant or over-fishing. Tables summarise effects of various activities on biological diversity, on sustainability of use of natural resources, on recreational assets and on health risks. Summary and conclusions are repeated in North Saami and in Greenlandic.
