Abstract: Describes a database for spectral downwelling attenuation coefficients and absorption coefficients for detrital matter and living phytoplankton. The data indicate that the submarine light field to a high extent is determined by living phytoplankton and that the optical properties of phytoplankton clearly differ from one group of algae to another. By applying in situ measurements of the underwater spectral light field in combination with bio-optical and productivity parameters, and data for the chlorophyll-a concentration, spring-bloom productivities are predicted up to 3 g C per sq.m per day for clear skies. This may be too high because the typical irradiance, due to the prevailing cloud cover, presumably is smaller by a factor of at least 2. It therefore suggests that their database be coupled to models of atmospheric irradiance that include variations due to cloud cover.
