Abstract: Presents a hypothesis about the Greenland Sea fresh-water layer. Results of two high-resolution convection models are discussed in relation to hydrographic features and ice conditions of the Greenland Sea. One is a 2.5-dimensional model, called SLICE. The second one is a fully three-dimensional convection model, called CUBE. Both models are non-linear and non-hydrostatic and they include all three Coriolis terms. Both are interactively coupled to a thermo-hydrodynamic ice model via fluxes of momentum, heat and salt. From a comparison of both models for the same stratification and forcing we know under which circumstances SLICE produces similar results as CUBE.
