Abstract: Fifteen isobaric and neutrally bouyant floats (RAFOS-VCM) were launched in the Greenland Basin during late winter and spring in 1993 and 1994, in situ temperatures, pressures and vertical currents were observed along quasi-Lagrangian trajectories at nearly constant depths. In March 1994, an anticyclonic eddy 30km wide, a mesoscale feature, was probably a so-called chimney, surprisingly stable both in space and time. After mid-March 1994, floats at 400 m depth indicated strong vertical displacements which seemed to be triggered by high surface-heat loss and were associated with the deepening of the mixed layer below the depth of 400 m.
