Abstract: Investigates convective chimneys in the Greenland Sea. In the northern area, the Boreas Basin, a chimney, about 15 km in diameter, was investigated in detail during February 1994. Inside the chimney, horizontal temperature and salinity variability with peaks on the 100-200 m and 1-2 km scales were detected. In the Greenland Basin during 1995 two possible chimneys of 10-20 km scale were observed, consisting of relatively cold and fresh pycnocline water embedded in the Atlantic-derived water mass flowing southwards in the western part of the gyre. On the rim of the 65 km-wide main ventilation zone, with a convection depth of about 800 m in the central gyre, the main pycnocline had descended to about 1200 m. Temperature-salinity and tracer signatures associated with this feature indicate recent ventilation, suggesting that mixing had taken place along isopycnals with subsequent shedding of a rim-cyclone during destabilisation.
