Record #140208:

Observations of convective plumes / B.J. Uscinski.

Title: Observations of convective plumes / B.J. Uscinski.
Author(s): Uscinski, B. J.
Date: 1996.
Publisher: Cambridge: Sea Ice Group, Scott Polar Research Institute, University of Cambridge
In: ESOP. European Subpolar Ocean Programme. Sea ice - ocean interactions. Volume 2. (1996.),
Abstract: Describes the theoretical planning and experimental execution of a trial to detect convective plumes, chimneys and other vertical circulation features, accompanied by temperature variations. Such features can be detected by acoustic methods. Although the conditions favouring Backhaus-type plumes were not encountered, the acoustic transmissions made in February 1994 in the Arctic Ocean revealed vertical bands present when strong surface cooling led to a rapid deepening of the mixed layer.
