| Abstract: | Responsible strategy must be based on: optimal size, species selectivity, minimum catch rejection and bi-catch mortality, fewest negative effects on environment, minimum energy consumption per unit catch and maximum quality/price. TAC's recommended quotas are regularly exceeded and there are few inspections. Spawning stocks of cod (Gadus morhua), herring (Clupea harengus) and mackerel (Scomber scombrus) are scarcely capable of recruitment. Whiting (Merlangus merlangus) and saithe (Pollachius virens) are also disturbingly few. |
