Record #140092:

A guide to the extraction and interpretation of otoliths from larval and pelagic juvenile Arcto-Norwegian cod (Gadus morhua) / Iain Suthers.

Title: A guide to the extraction and interpretation of otoliths from larval and pelagic juvenile Arcto-Norwegian cod (Gadus morhua) / Iain Suthers.
Author(s): Suthers, Iain.
Date: 1996.
In: Fisken og Havet. (1996.), Vol. 13 (1996)
Abstract: Increment deposition in species is daily, commencing at hatch. First 2-3 daily growth increments may be overlooked. Post-larval otoliths provide some difficulties in interpretation, probably due to rapid growth in post- larval stage (nearly twice that of western Atlantic cod) and growth in 24 hr daylight. Using light microscope, increments may be enumerated from 1 to over 120 days post-hatch. Use of lapillus over sagitta is recommended. Lapillus radius is linearly related to length, and increment widths seem closely related to feeding rates.
