Abstract: The horizontal length scale of individual convective plumes, which are important for deep-water formation in oceans, is of the order of some hundred metres. So the convection process cannot be resolved in numerical basin-scale ocean models in which the convection region with a horizontal length scale of 10-100 km is represented by a few grid boxes. The convection must therefore be parameterized. A parameterization using increased diffusion, to include the effects of the penetrative convection, is shown and evaluated, using a Large Eddy Simulation (LES) numerical model. The subgrid-scale parameterisation yielded satisfactory results for purely thermally-driven convection, as well as convection due to brine drainage under sea ice.
