Abstract: A series of ice maps was compiled for the period 1853 to 1900, based on ships' log books from sealers archived at the Norwegian Polar Institute. A comparison with an ice-map series from 1966 to 1988 has found that the ice extent in the Greenland Sea has shrunk by about 20 per cent during the last 100 years.
