Abstract: CO₂ gas-exchange studies on lichens and bryophytes carried out over 20 yr are reviewed. Snow is important factor for cryptogams. Epiphytic lichen Parmelia olivacea could be used as indicator for winter snow depth in sub-Arctic birch forest. Some species can photosynthesize even under snow layer. Some mosses respond to environmental changes with unexpected growth.
