Record #139371:

Peat formation and mass balance in sub-Arctic ombrotrophic peatlands around Abisko, northern Scandinavia / Nils Malmer, Bo Wallén.

Title: Peat formation and mass balance in sub-Arctic ombrotrophic peatlands around Abisko, northern Scandinavia / Nils Malmer, Bo Wallén.
Author(s): Malmer, Nils.
Wallén, Bo.
Date: 1996.
In: Ecological Bulletins. (1996.), Vol. 45 (1996)
Abstract: Apparent short-term litter formation rate in dominant Sphagnum communities characterising extensive ombrotrophic parts of mires, most with permafrost, has been estimated over 14 yr period using ¹⁴C labelling. Losses due to decay in acrotelm were estimated from change in concentration of nitrogen above upper limit of catotelm. Ombrotrophic peat is thin, but is dated at up to 800 yr. Recent accumulation rate is not enough to compensate for decay losses in acrotelm. Carbon balance changed from source to sink recently.
