Record #139281:

Seismic reflection evidence for a deep subglacial trough beneath Jakobshavns Isbrae, West Greenland / Ted S. Clarke, Keith Echelmeyer.

Title: Seismic reflection evidence for a deep subglacial trough beneath Jakobshavns Isbrae, West Greenland / Ted S. Clarke, Keith Echelmeyer.
Author(s): Clarke, Ted S.
Echelmeyer, Keith.
Date: 1996.
In: Journal of Glaciology. (1996.), Vol. 42(141) (1996)
Abstract: Reflection methods were used to determine ice thickness and basal topography of Isbrae, large, fast-moving outlet glacier. Data analysis method yields depth, position and slope of basal reflector from linear seismic array and single explosive source. Deep U-shaped trough was found under entire glacier, incised up to 1500 m into bedrock and 1200 m below sea level for 70 km. Centre-line thickness of ice was 2500 m, about 2.5 times that of ice sheet. There is high basal shear stress along glacier, with internal deformation playing dominant role.
