Record #139220:

Competitive trade-off strategies in Arctic Daphnia linked to melanism and UV-B stress / Dag O. Hessen.

Title: Competitive trade-off strategies in Arctic Daphnia linked to melanism and UV-B stress / Dag O. Hessen.
Author(s): Hessen, Dag O.
Date: 1996.
In: Polar Biology. (1996.), Vol. 16(8) (1996)
Abstract: High-Arctic freshwater localities at Ny-Ålesund, Svalbard, were examined for their UV-absorbing properties, depth and presence of melanic or non-melanic morphs of planktonic crustacean Daphnia pulex. Light was measured with spectro-radiometer. No clear relationship between UV transparency and occurrence of melanics was seen. In laboratory melanics grew more slowly. They were more resistant to UV light, suggesting trade-off between this protection and metabolic effort. Frequency of types of morph could serve as indicator of UV stress.
