Record #139074:

The effect and extent of heavy grazing by reindeer in oligotrophic pine heaths in north-eastern Fennoscandia / Henry Väre, Rauni Ohtonen, Kari Mikkola.

Title: The effect and extent of heavy grazing by reindeer in oligotrophic pine heaths in north-eastern Fennoscandia / Henry Väre, Rauni Ohtonen, Kari Mikkola.
Author(s): Väre, Henry.

Date: 1996.
In: Ecography. (1996.), Vol. 19(3) (1996)
Abstract: 30 and 50-year old exclosures in lichen-rich oligotrophic pine forests on podzolised soil were used to study effect of reindeer grazing on pine fine roots, microbial activity and on bryophyte, dwarf shrub and lichen biomasses. There were significantly fewer lichens at grazed sites. Lichens other than Cladina stellaris benefited from grazing. Biomass of vascular plants was reduced at grazed sites. Microbial activity and fine root parameters were significantly lower at grazed sites. Remote sensing reveals extent of heavy grazing.
