Record #139028:

A history of sea ice in the Canadian Arctic Archipelago based on postglacial remains of the bowhead whale (Balaena mysticetus) / Arthur S. Dyke, James Hooper, James M. Savelle.

Title: A history of sea ice in the Canadian Arctic Archipelago based on postglacial remains of the bowhead whale (Balaena mysticetus) / Arthur S. Dyke, James Hooper, James M. Savelle.
Author(s): Dyke, Arthur S.
Hooper, James.
Savelle, James M.
Date: 1996.
In: Arctic. (1996.), Vol. 49(3) (1996)
Abstract: Seeks to demonstrate that bowhead whale subfossils yield best available proxy of sea-ice data allowing reconstruction of postglacial sea ice history throughout region. Species is adapted to living in loose edges of north polar ice and its annual migrations roughly track advance and retreat of floe edge. Distribution and radiocarbon ages of bowhead subfossils show that range of whale has expanded and contracted abruptly several times over last 10,500 years. Each expansion or contraction was followed by nearly stable conditions persisting for millenia.
