SAR observations of Arctic freeze-up compared to SSM/I during ARCTIC'91 / M.I. Pettersson, J. Askne ; D.J. Cavalieri.
Title: | SAR observations of Arctic freeze-up compared to SSM/I during ARCTIC'91 / M.I. Pettersson, J. Askne ; D.J. Cavalieri. |
Author(s): | Pettersson, M. I., Askne, J., Cavalieri, D. J. |

Abstract: | Ice concentration analyses are used to estimate the different ice classes, during the International Arctic Ocean Expedition 1 August - 14 October 1991. Data derived from SAR were compared with SSM/I data (NASA team algorithm) and ship observations. It was found that SSM/I may underestimate ice concentration by 20 per cent due to thin ice formation and melting conditions, while SAR may overestimate. |
