Abstract: Bertelsen was doctor for Danish Literary Greenland Expedition. Next year he returned southwards collecting disease statistics. In 1904 he became locum in North Greenland at Umanak. He tried posts in Denmark, but returned to Greenland and remained until 1927, treating all kinds of disease, training midwives, organising, writing, taking photographs, both for instruction and from his other interests. He then became medical consultant to Greenland government in Copenhagen until 1947, and continued working after retirement. His wife Johanne was related to Knud Rasmussen; her son became colony chairman.
