A large deep freshwater lake beneath the ice of central East Antarctica / Andrey P. Kapitsa, Jeffrey K. Ridley, Gordon de Quetteville Robin, Martin J. Siegert, Igor A. Zotikov.
Title: | A large deep freshwater lake beneath the ice of central East Antarctica / Andrey P. Kapitsa, Jeffrey K. Ridley, Gordon de Quetteville Robin, Martin J. Siegert, Igor A. Zotikov. |
Author(s): | Kapitsa, Andrey P. Ridley, Jeffrey K. Robin, Gordon de Quetteville. Siegert, Martin J. Zotikov, Igor A. |
Date: | 1996. |
In: | Nature. (1996.), Vol. 381(20 June) (1996) |
Abstract: | The combination of radio-echo sounding data from 1974-75 and altimetric satellite data from 1993 confirmed the existence of a 10,000 sq.km. lake beneath 4 km of ice. Existing seismic data shows that the lake is 125+ m deep and of freshwater. The mean age of water in the lake is estimated to be around 1 million years. Easterly ice movement onto the lake is around 3 m per year. Consideration is given to the prevention of pollution of the water caused by ice drilling. |
