Abstract: Article gives history of Saami language use and education in it. Statistics are unavailable except from small studies, as not even number of Saami is known, still less numbers of speakers and their competence. Much depends on use in families, but schools and media are raising use of language compared with 30 years ago. North Saami is used in all three countries and is in much healthiest state of 9 "dialects" and 6 orthographies.
