Abstract: | Well into 20th Cent. there were people in Sweden who lived far from modern conveniences and for whom paraffin lamps rather than electricity represented entry of civilisation. Archaeologists and historians know more about ancient Rome than about these settlers in mountains of Lapland. Tools rust away, farms are deserted, even burnt. Crafts die with their practioners. Account is based on many recorded interviews (with brief biographies) and unpublished manuscripts besides literature. Appendix on settler dialect and vocabulary influenced by Saami and Norwegian. |
