Abstract: | Title refers to Hilmar Nøis from Andøya who spent most of his life on Svalbard. He overwintered 38 times. Author used his diary. Others described are legendary hunters such as Henry Rudi, Arthur Oxaas and Waldemar Kraemer and women hunters Sally Kraemer and Wanny Wollstad. Author, who met several of these, describes how they coped with loneliness and hardship while seeking adventure, yet another overwintring, and great responsibility they felt for one another. All ended in evacuation of 763 Norwegians to Britain in 1941. They found work, but life of Svalbard never fully returned. |
