| Abstract: | Foyn was Norway's first modern national hero, with victories heralded in newspapers North and South - nature and its Moby Dicks were foes. Foyn's modernisation led both Norway and Europe. His impact lasted just one generation, from mid-1860s to 1904, when large whales were protected. Local community began by mixed welcome - work and profits, but stench and pollution - and running battle went on over water rate. Foyn was genuine but paternalistic benefactor, Christian and mission supporter. In 1884, quest for whales led to his departure from Vadsø and local resentment. |
