Record #136396:

Translated title: Demographic conditions and experiences of smallpox among Gällivare Saami during 18th Cent.
Author(s): Sköld, Peter.
Date: 1995.
Publisher: Umeå, Sweden: Historika institutionen Umeå universitet
Language: Swedish.
In: Föredrag vid Nordiska Samehistoria. (1995.),
Abstract: Talk gives figures for period, with vaccination available towards end. Usually Saami were less affected than rest of Swedish population, perhaps because relatively isolated, perhaps because more scattered. Disease was much dreaded, as Linnaeus noted, its name taboo, and common recourse was to fly to hills. Mortality varied considerably between settlements. Study of marriage showed high probability of marriage between recovered subjects - smallpox could leave many handicaps or impairment.
