Abstract: Speaker describes four main groups of Saami in Finland before WW2 and character of their ways of life, from forest herding to agriculture. Evacuation during departure of German forces and entry of Russians meant much hardship and exposure to new climate and diseases. On return much had changed, clothing, economic activity, schooling, language use. Settlements had mainly to be rebuilt. But community organisation had become stronger and even Finnisation was not to be permanent.
