Title: Minoriteterna och språket: språkpolitiken mot Samer och finskspråkiga Svenskar 1870-1909 / Lars Elenius.
Translated title: Minorities and language: language politics against Saami and Finnish-speaking Swedes 1870-1909.
Author(s): Elenius, Lars.
Date: 1995.
Publisher: Umeå, Sweden: Historika institutionen Umeå universitet
Language: Swedish.
In: Föredrag vid Nordiska Samehistoria. (1995.),
Abstract: Sweden was multilingual up to 1809 - 18 languages used. In Lapp area in 1799 5000 Saami were counted and 6000 settlers, mainly Finns. By 1860 latter were 14 000. Saami were treated much of time as primitives whose way of life should be preserved. Church and anti-clerical leaderships agreed on many aspects of Saami education, though aims were different. Swedisation affected Saami as community, while it tended to affect Finns individually, helping only most intelligent children.
