Author(s): | Sonne, Birgitte. |
Date: | 1995. |

In: | Forskning i Grønland = Tusaat. (1995.), Vol. 2-3 (1995) |
Abstract: | Both Thalbitzer and Holtved were deeply engaged in question of origin of Eskimo culture. Thalbitzer was explicit in his idea, whereby role of angakkoq was to cope with spirit world that was lurking around normal one. Spirits entered angakkoq who could then tackle sickness and other threats. Thalbitzer also tried to merge quite independent moon, sea and air divinities in Olympian style, possibly in order to assert culture's high status. Holtved was vaguer, swamped by his extensive knowledge of Eskimo ways. Author gives example of Holtved's handling of two Realms of Dead. |
