Record #136251:

Seasonal distribution, condition and feeding habits of Barents Sea harp seals (Phoca groenlandica) / Kjell Tormod Nilssen.

Title: Seasonal distribution, condition and feeding habits of Barents Sea harp seals (Phoca groenlandica) / Kjell Tormod Nilssen.
Author(s): Nilssen, Kjell Tormod.
Date: 1995.
Publisher: Amsterdam: Elsevier Science B.V.
In: Whales, seals, fish and man. (1995.),
Abstract: In May-June these seals move to northern areas of Sea to feed on open waters and along drift ice. In winter and spring stock is usually found in south-eastern areas of Barents Sea and White Sea, where breeding (late Feb. to early March) and moult (April-May) take place with decrease in blubber. Seasonal variations in condition indicate that late summer and autumn are most intensive feeding periods, with amphipod Parathemisto libellula dominant prey from Sept. to mid-Oct. Diet then shifts to capelin and some Polar cod. In later winter herring was main prey in south-eastern Barents Sea.
