Abstract: | Explores interconnections between nationalism, ethnic relations, social structure, and continuing political process in Soviet and post-Soviet regions. Demonstrates applicability of contemporary Western schools of thought in relation to issues such as nationalism, modernization, democracy and civil society in post-Soviet context. Presents case studies illustrating theoretical points. Chapter six examines nationalism of groups which enjoy degree of autonomy based on example of Yakuty. Based on author's work as Soviet anthropologist, experience as refusenik, and visits to CIS since his emigration in 1990. |
