| Abstract: | Contemporary with Ottar, chief's family lived further south on Hålogaland. Article tells of its large landholdings, perhaps from end of 900s, and rental system. North of Malangen, whole pattern changed, with private ownership and different tax system, including special taxes on Saami. Author speculates on relations between them and Norsemen. Vacuum that followed decline of Bjarkøy family was filled by Karelians and Swedish tax-collectors. |
