Abstract: Author relates four settlements to world beyond: Stone Age, mediaeval, pre-war and contemporary. Vega has house, hunting, fishing and landing sites, moving as sea rose. Vågan was cradle of dried fish industry and trade. Numerous remains of imported articles. Måstad is near fishing grounds, but motor boats needed more sheltered moorings. For these and other reasons many people emigrated. Sulitjelma harboured copper, sulphur and zinc. They were fully exploited from 1887, with world's first electric smelter. Mine became uncompetitive and closed in 1991. Change is normal.
