Abstract: Author quotes from historical documents on problem of early knowledge of Spitsbergen, starting with J. Münster's letter to King Juan II of Portugal, 1493, and going via Danish attempts to find Grønland through Adml. S. Norby and English merchant E. Robertus to S. Heberstein's "Itinerary of Moskovia", 1557. Final section deals with cartographers' gradual insulation of Engroneland and some aspects of Spitsbergen's geography.
