| Abstract: | Attitude of Soviet changed according to its felt power, with constant aim to keep presence in islands. Towards end of war, Molotov pressed very hard for bases on islands and in Finnmark, but ploy misfired by revealing Communist bullying to West. Same later happened when Soviets tried to raise question of western bases on Greenland and in Iceland and to link it with Svalbard. Founding of NATO underlined failure here too. |
